Tuckpointing & Brick Restoration

Mortar is the part of a brick chimney that's meant to wear out first. When the joints crumble, we grind out the failing mortar and repoint with fresh, color-matched mortar so the brick stays tight and dry.

Why mortar joints matter more than the brick

A brick chimney is only as watertight as the mortar between the bricks. Over years of sun, rain, and Michigan freeze-thaw cycles, mortar joints shrink, crack, and erode. Once they open up, water soaks into the wall, freezes, expands, and pushes the masonry apart a little more every winter.

Tuckpointing (also called repointing) stops that cycle. Failing mortar is cut back to a consistent depth, the joints are cleaned, and new mortar is packed in and tooled to match the look of the original joints. Done at the right time, it's one of the most cost-effective ways to extend the life of a chimney or brick wall.

Brick restoration goes a step further when a wall needs more than new joints: resetting loose bricks, replacing individual damaged units, and cleaning up past patch jobs so the masonry looks consistent again.

Signs your chimney or brick needs tuckpointing

  • Recessed or sandy joints

Mortar that has worn back from the brick face, or crumbles when you rub it, is no longer sealing the wall.

  • Cracks along the joints

Stair-step or horizontal cracks through the mortar let water travel deep into the masonry.

  • Loose or shifting bricks

Bricks near the top of the chimney that wiggle or have dropped out are a sign the joints have failed.

  • Mortar debris on the roof

Grit and mortar chunks in gutters or on shingles below the chimney mean the joints are washing out.

  • White staining (efflorescence)

Chalky white deposits show water is moving through the wall and carrying salts to the surface.

  • Mismatched patch jobs

Smeared caulk or off-color patches from past quick fixes often trap water instead of keeping it out.

How it works

Inspect first. Then fix it right.

No guesswork and no surprises. You know what's wrong and what it costs before any work begins. If we uncover more damage, we stop and get your approval first.

  1. 1

    Inspect & document

Our 60-point inspection shows how deep the mortar damage goes and whether any bricks also need attention. You see photos of every problem area.

  2. 2

    Match the mortar

We match mortar color to your existing masonry so the repaired joints blend in instead of standing out.

  3. 3

    Cut out & repoint

Failing mortar is ground out to a consistent depth, the joints are cleaned, and new mortar is packed in and tooled.

  4. 4

    Cure & clean up

We work with the weather so the mortar sets and cures properly, then clean the brick and the work area.

More FAQs
What is the difference between tuckpointing and repointing?

People use both words for the same basic job: removing deteriorated mortar from the joints and replacing it with new mortar. Strictly speaking, "tuckpointing" can also describe a decorative finishing technique, but for most homeowners the goal is the same: sound, watertight joints.

How do I know if my chimney needs tuckpointing or a rebuild?

It depends on how far the damage has gone. If the bricks are solid and only the joints are failing, tuckpointing is usually the right repair. If bricks are spalling badly, the chimney is leaning, or the top courses are loose, part of the chimney may need to be rebuilt. The inspection tells us which, and we'll tell you straight even when the answer is the smaller repair.

Will the new mortar match my existing joints?

We match mortar color to your home so the repair blends in. Brand-new mortar can look slightly fresher at first and tends to settle in as it weathers.

How long does tuckpointing take?

A straightforward tuckpointing job might wrap up in a couple of days. Larger walls or chimneys with more damage take longer. You'll get a timeline with your estimate before any work starts.

Can tuckpointing be done in cold weather?

Mortar needs the right temperature and dry conditions to cure properly, so we schedule around the forecast. If weather would compromise the work, we'll move the start date and keep you posted rather than push it.
